"It is so difficult to put into words what my coaching relationship was like with Dan. Just think of a sigh, a long sigh, with a bit of longing, self-satisfaction, a breath of fresh air and time standing still.

I met Dan at an introductory session sponsored by CTI (Coaches Training Institute) whose purpose was to expose us to the coaching profession. I remember Dan as sort of quirky eccentric Court Jester. He entertained the group with his beautiful poems.

A few months after the session Dan called me to ask me if I would entertain the idea of having him coach me. He explained that he had continued the coaching training, was just starting out in the coaching profession and asked if I might be one of his clients. I put him off at the time, since a business coach was already coaching me.

A few months later, he called me again and I agreed to be coached by him. He sent me an introductory worksheet to be completed before our first session. The questions were thought provoking and took a lot of work and thinking on my part to complete.

As we began our relationship, I was very enthused. Dan was gentle, the opposite of my business coach. During my prior sessions with the business coach, I always had lots of work to do. I learned a lot from my business coach, however it was nice to be working with Dan. He had a way of putting the exact words around feelings and thoughts I had difficulty expressing.

Dan encouraged me to attend a Leadership program in Sebastapol, CA. Coaches Training Institute sponsored the program. I am glad that I took Dan's suggestion to attend Leadership. Since Dan had attended a few months before I did, it was good to be able to talk to him about different aspects of the program and to re-visit some of the nuances that I missed during the program.

During the time that Dan coached me, I never felt pressured, upset or angry about anything Dan and I discussed. He was truly my coach and advocate during the 3-4 years we worked with each other. We also shared somewhat of a common heritage, and on the things that he did not personally experience in his earlier days, he was able to relate to a person in his life that did and in doing so, relate it to me.

Many times, I would come to the call depressed and just talking to Dan, helped me get out of my doldrums. Today, after a few months of not being coached by Dan, oftentimes, I surmise what our conversation would be like regarding a specific situation in my life. Dan also coached me through the loss of my father who was a big part of my life.

Since being coached by Dan, I find that I have much more confidence in myself and I've stopped doubting whether or not my ideas have merit. Dan helped me develop listening to my intuition. He also pointed me towards the important things in my life: my love of adventure and nature. Many times, he painted a mental image for me to enhance my learning experience of myself.

Three people have coached me and each one of them had their area of expertise. Dan, however, was the person with whom I coached with for the longest period of time.
